The ship ran aground when it was close to the Italian port causing panic among the passengers, many of whom were thrown into the sea. The Coast Guard immediately intervened to recover the passengers were thrown into the water and to help those who remained on board.
Television footage showed dramatic scenes of refugees clinging to ropes to pull the rusty fishing boat to shore and some men who swam for help. On Sunday, another boat carrying about 800 immigrants had arrived in Lampedusa, the first port from things African.
In recent weeks have reached Lampedusa thousands of refugees. This is Tunisians who leave their country to seek work in Europe, especially in France, or are refugees fleeing Libya.
